In this modern world of Nanotechnology, researchers are finding new
things and taking the technology to the next level. In the recent research,
scientists found a new way to get clothes spick and span which is quite
interesting. All you need is a little bit of sunshine or even a light bulb to
get your clothes cleaned.
Scientists from the RMIT
University in Melbourne and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane,
Australia have been remarkably instrumental in researching and developing a
pioneering nanotechnology methodology that encompasses the ability to create
textiles that can miraculously clean itself.

In this process of
self-cleaning textiles, Copper and Silver-based nanostructures are famed for
their ability in terms of absorption of light. When these nanostructures are
exposed to light, they break down the organic matter such as stains, making it
clean. Rajesh Ramanathan, who is one of the lead researchers at the Ian Potter
NanoBioSensing Facility and NanoBiotechnology Research Lab at RMIT is leading
this state-of-the-art research.
The team of scientists found
that by treating the fabric with certain solutions, these nanostructures were
able to grow steadfastly onto the textile within a span of half an hour.
Thereafter, as soon as they were exposed to light, energy is released and the
varied organic compounds present in the fabric degrade and disappear.

“Basically, what we do is
take a simple cotton textile, we have a few different new methodologies to grow
nanostructures directly on them, and then once these structures are formed we
can just shine the light on them,” explained Ramanathan. This practice had been
adopted previously but it consumed a lot of time and money.
Cleaning up clothes will be
absolutely easy and hassle-free, saving both cost and time in the process, and
leaving behind spotlessly clean clothes. The approach is now cost-effective,
time-saving, and washing machines might soon be replaced with these innovative
self-cleaning cloth materials added Ramanathan.
